The Department of Economics has risen to national prominence in recent years by attracting internationally renowned scholars to its faculty and by carefully selecting its student body. Different tracks are provided for students with varying career interests. The Ph.D. program equips its graduates with modern economic techniques, enabling them to take leadership positions in economic research in the academic, business, and government worlds.
We believe that we can offer students an outstanding intellectual environment. Seven members of our department are Fellows of the Econmetric Society. Many currently serve or have served on the editorial boards of major journals, including the AER, Econometrica, the Review of Economic Studies, and the Journal of Economic Theory. Perhaps most significant, our department was recently ranked sixth in terms of pages published in major journals. Each year, the C.V. Eligibility and PrerequisitesThe two-year MBA program is designed for non-business baccalaureate degree holders and business majors from non-AACSB International accredited institutions. The program involves four semesters of full-time study with fall semester admission only. While no prior business coursework is required of two-year students, it is often advantageous for incoming students to acquaint themselves with several functional areas of business prior to enrollment. Students in past years have benefited most from introductory coursework in accounting, statistics and economics.

A solid foundation in math will be needed to be successful in the program. This will require you to assess your quantitative background and, if you feel it is necessary, to prepare yourself for the program by taking a business math course.

The Accelerated 11-Month MBA ProgramThe leadership development experience of the accelerated 11-month program is like the two-year experience, but in concentrated form. Eleven-month students participate in the same seminars and workshops and work in permanent teams during the summer semester. During the fall and spring, they also have identical MBA P.L.U.S. and Career Resource Center requirements and opportunities. Moreover, each student works with his or her own professional leadership coach and meets regularly with that coach over the 11-month period to advance in self-awareness, implement a personal leadership development plan, process feedback, and reflect and refocus for further growth.

The Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan and the Medical School offer a dual degree program that enables qualified students to pursue concurrent work in medicine and business, leading to the Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Doctor of Medicine (MD) degrees.
Students admitted to this dual degree program must satisfy the following requirements:
1) MBA 57 credit hour degree program including:
45 Business Administration Credits, made up of: Roughly 30 credit hour MBA core (no credit is awarded for Business Administration courses successfully waived; credit must be earned with Business electives); Roughly 15 elective hours in Business Administration; MBA Communication Requirement. 2) MD program comprising approximately 167 credit hours:
Approximately 46 credit hour M1 coursework; CONTACT HOURS Approximately 49 credit hour M2 coursework; NOT YET KNOWN Approximately 48 credit hour M3 coursework; Approximately 24 credit hour M4 coursework.
The MD/MBA Program is a five-year integrated program. Students accepted into the Program will spend their first three years in Medical School, completing the M1, M2, and M3 course work. These students will then matriculate in Michigan's Ross School of Business complete the full first year MBA course load as their fourth program year, and complete an MBA summer internship, if desired, between the fourth and fifth program years. Doctoral ProgramObjectivesThe Darden School offers a demanding PhD program for a select group of very promising applicants. The program aims to be distinctive not only by providing sound training in the theory and methodology of the student's chosen field, but also by training students to perform applied research of relevance to both practitioners and academics. Graduates of the program are expected to be able to conduct rigorous research that contributes to the solution of management problems in a creative and original fashion. The program provides exposure to a variety of academic disciplines, research methodologies, and pedagogies. Interactive approaches to the learning process are emphasized.
The Doctoral Program offers two distinct tracks: the Joint MBA/PhD Program for individuals who have not earned an MBA degree; and a second track, The PhD Program, for individuals who have earned an MBA. The first track, the Joint MBA/PhD Program is a four-year program, and students interested in this program should apply directly to the MBA Admissions Office. This program allows students to attend the first-year of Darden's traditional MBA Program and then go directly into doctoral work. The second track, the PhD Program, is a three-year program for those who have earned an MBA or equivalent.
A doctoral student must specialize in a major field of study. The School has authorized major fields in Finance, Management(with subfields in Business Ethics, Entrepreneurship, General Management, and Strategic Management), Marketing, and Operations Management. In making its admissions decisions each year, the School may choose not to admit doctoral students to a particular field.

The Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan and the School of Education within the Rackham School of Graduate Studies offer a dual degree program enabling a small number of qualified students to pursue concurrent work in business administration and education leading to the MBA and MA degrees.
The program is arranged so that all requirements for both degrees are completed in two and one-half to three years of enrollment. The degrees are awarded simultaneously.
This combined degree program is not open to students who have earned either the MBA or a Master’s degree in Education. Students enrolled in the first year of either program may apply.
Graduate work in the M.B.A. program teaches students the technical/financial skills of business management. Graduate work in the School of Education adds theoretical grounding in the foundation of education and a deeper understanding of the complexities of education policy and practice. The specializations available in educational studies provide opportunity for dual degree students to design a program of study that is appropriate to their academic and career interests. The Educational Studies masters program provides dual degree students with deep exposure to educational theory and the programmatic flexibility to pursue a specialized area of interest that compliments the MBA experience.
Students admitted to this dual degree program must satisfy the following degree requirements:

This combined degree program is not open to students who have earned either the MBA or M. Arch. degrees. Students registered in the first year of either program may apply. Both programs admit for fall term only.
Students admitted to this dual degree program must satisfy the following requirements:
1) The MBA 57 credit hour degree program including:
Roughly 30 credit hour MBA core (no credit is awarded for Business Administration core courses successfully waived: credit must be earned with Business electives); Roughly 15 elective hours in Business Administration; MBA Communication Requirement. 2) The M. Arch. 60 credit hour degree program including:
36 hours in 500/600 level architecture courses, including four semesters—24 hours—of design (Arch. 552, Arch. 562. Arch. 672, Arch. 682); one course—3 hours—in each of three subject areas: Architectural History, Environmental Technology, and Structures; four courses—12 hours—of specific required architectural courses (Arch.576, Architectural Representation; Arch. 572, Architectural Theory and Criticism; Arch 583, Professional Practice; and Arch. 589, Site Planning); 15 hours of transferable credit hours from the School of Business Administration. The total credit hours for the dual degree must be at least 90.
Studies may begin in either school. However, because of the sequenced nature of core courses in the MBA program, most students will find it advantageous to start with year one in the Business School. During year two the students will fulfill the first year curriculum for the Master of Architecture. In year three, the student will attend courses in both programs. Each school will apply its own deferred admission standards to students who elect to take the first year in the other school. Students who wish to begin with Architecture should see a counselor in the Business School to arrange an appropriate plan of study. No course work completed prior to admission in either of the two halves of the program may be counted toward the MBA requirements of the dual program.
Candidates interested in the dual program must file separate applications to and be admitted by both schools. Applicants must indicate on both applications that they are applying for this specific dual degree program. The application fee can be paid to either of the two schools; please include a note regarding the disposition of the fee to the school not receiving the money.
The GMAT is required for admission to Michigan's Ross School of Business. The GRE is required for admission to the A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning.
This schedule of architecture courses is highly recommended and directed toward students who desire Profession Practice as a focus to their program. Other areas of emphasis, however, may be pursued. Please note the 90 hours cannot include transfer credit from units outside of Business or Architecture and/or work experience.

Established MBA Dual Degree Programs The Ross School of Business offers over 20 established dual degree programs at the MBA level, enabling qualified students to pursue concurrent work in business administration and other disciplines within the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. Most of our established dual degrees are completed in roughly three years and lead to both an MBA and a master's degree in another area. STR 403. The Economic Theory of Organizations
The course combines basic economic concepts introduced in STR 401 with agency theory and the concept of specific knowledge to develop a framework for addressing and solving important organizational problems. Key elements include: the assignment of the performance-evaluation system and the compensation/incentive system. Each of these elements is analyzed in detail. The framework is applied to analyze a variety of contemporary managerial topics such as total quality management, business-process reengineering, outsourcing, transfer pricing, leadership and business ethics.
ACC 410. Accounting for Management and Control
By examining the tension between decision making and control in organizations, the course examines a variety of questions such as: Why do managers allocate fixed costs, transfer goods between sub-units at full cost, and use other accounting policies that deviate from marginal cost? What are activity-based costing, normal costing, and economic value added (EVA), and why are managers adopting these techniques? Topics include: analyzing traditional costing systems, divisional performance measurement, transfer pricing, cost allocations, opportunity cost, budgeting and standard costing. The course provides students with a framework to understand and productively use accounting systems. Emphasis is placed on the problems of motivation and control in organizations and the role of accounting information in this context.
HSM 430. Health Care Strategy
This course introduces students to the actors in the health care system (physicians, hospitals and insurers) and builds a framework for analyzing the strategic decisions they face both within the organization as well as the health care market. The analytical concepts are economic in nature, and based on an examination of objectives, incentives, property rights, information and constraints faced by each actor. The course focuses on the interdependence of decisions, the interplay among the providers in the health care marketplace and, further, how the form of this interaction is influenced by changes in the market structure and financing of health care services. Topics include: mergers, joint ventures and alliances among health care organizations, the form of contracts written between health care providers and insurers, choice of quality and price, scope of services, technology and the formation of integrated delivery systems.
The course begins by discussing the objectives and behavior of the principal actors in the health care system under alternative market and financing structures. It then examines each actors strategic options and the effect of strategic decisions on competitive behavior as well as service delivery. The course makes use of case discussions as well as class projects such that students gain experience with actual strategic problems faced by managers in the health care industry.
HSM 431. Applications of Corporate Finance and Governance to Health Care
This course applies the principles of corporate finance and governance to the institutional setting of health care. It draws on the principles of financial valuation, investments and corporate financing, as well as the economics of organizations and corporate governance, to analyze current management problems in the health care sector. The primary purpose of the course is to gain an understanding and comfort level with applying economic and financial theories within the unique institutional setting of health care.
BPP 440. Evolving Medical Markets
Firms supplying products and services to the health care industry face a variety of regulatory and marketing challenges that will be explored in this course. Topics include: the economics of developing and marketing new medical technologies, regulations affecting market structure, health and safety regulations and insurance markets. The course will cover evaluation tools frequently used in public policy debates and in marketing medical technologies including cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness analysis and quality of life indices.
HSM 437. Managing Health Care Operations
The health care industry is undergoing rapid growth as well as rapid structural changes. New technology, changing reimbursement mechanisms, and increased competition create many interesting management problems, not in the least in the area of health care operations. In this course, we will study the operations of various types of health care provider organizations (such as hospitals, HMOs, group practices, nursing homes, etc.) and other participants in the industry (such as insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, suppliers and consulting companies). Topics that will be studied include: patient and provider scheduling, capacity management, providing services and supplies to health care providers, new product development and integrated delivery systems.

Management Science, a field of management also known under the name of Operations Research, is a cross-functional discipline that is concerned with the design and management of complex systems in industry, commerce, or the public sector. The discipline is largely defined through its use of mathematical and computational modelling as its primary methodology to gain an understanding of systems and achieve improvements in them. The key issues that Management Scientists wrestle with are uncertainty, change and choice between alternatives. In a nutshell, Management Scientists build mathematical and computer models on the basis of available data to help to make good decisions in a complex, dynamic and uncertain world. Starting in early October, the MPhil in Management Science is an intensive nine months programme combining advanced study and research. The programme is designed as a first year of a PhD degree in the subject. A Cambridge PhD degree will typically require an additional 2-3 years of research. Students on the MPhil in Management Science have the opportunity to take courses in four Cambridge faculties, the Faculty of Business and Management, the Faculty of Mathematics, the Faculty of Economics and the Faculty of Engineering.
Students come to the programme with an excellent mathematical background, typically a first class degree in mathematics, physics, or another science or engineering subject with a substantial mathematical component, and the desire to apply their technical knowledge to the complexity of real-world management problems. The programme is very demanding and offers a fast-track to the essential theories and techniques required to do successful research in Management Science. In addition to coursework, students will work closely with a faculty member on a research topic. The MPhil in Management is a taught Masters' programme which offers new and recent graduates of any subject (except those with a single honours or major degree in business or management) a thorough grounding in management. Students admitted will normally have a First Class Honours degree or its equivalent but should not have extensive work experience. The MPhil is conceived of as a graduate conversion course which will prepare students for a professional career. It does, nevertheless, set high academic and intellectual standards, being based upon the latest academic research in the field. The normal expectation is that graduates of the MPhil will wish to seek a professional career in management, but it may occasionally be that, subject to acceptance and to 3 further years of study, graduates may undertake research for a PhD. Students wishing to do so must apply for the PhD programme in the normal way and should note that there is no research or research training component on this MPhil.

The philosophy behind the programme is that whilst effective management requires experience, a good grounding in academic knowledge is an invaluable prerequisite for a managerial career. OMG 412. Service Management
Success of service management critically depends on managing the integration of business processes with customers as well as all related support systems (technology, human resources, information flow). This course provides a foundation for the analysis and improvement of businesses, paying particular attention to the service sector. The type of analysis learned in this course is required in virtually every industry as companies work to improve their bottom-line performance. The best way to improve performance is through a holistic approach, where the structure of processes, information and technological requirements, and the managerial implications are considered concurrently. The methodologies developed in this course will provide a framework for analysis that will remain constant amidst the many different types of services analyzed. Please note that this course is case intensive.
Advanced courses (select three)
OMG 411. Supply Chain Management
This course gives an overview of supply chain management in a wide variety of industries such as: groceries, style goods, consumer electronics and services. The impact of shifts from traditional channels to e-commerce will be emphasized. New initiatives introduced to address these new challenges, such as: vendor managed inventory (VMI), variety postponement, cross docking, real options contracts and quick response, will be studied and applied both in class and assignments. Supporting software, such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and supply chain tools, will also be discussed. After completing this course, the student should be able to characterize the supply chain issues in an industry/firm, and evaluate current practice as well as identify improvement opportunities.
OMG 413. International Manufacturing and Service Strategy
Operations strategy describes how a firms long-term operations decisions affect its ability to compete. Areas of critical importance to firms often include: location and distribution policy; management and global networks; outsourcing and vertical integration decisions; coordination of operations with other functions such as finance; accounting and finance, technology acquisition and new product development. Special emphasis is placed on the impact of international issues on operations strategy. A variety of cases is used to demonstrate applications.
OMG 415. Process Improvement
This course will teach a systematic method for understanding and improving ongoing business processes. The techniques you learn in this class provide a systematic method of asking questions, collecting data, and analyzing that data to learn how processes work (or are failing) and what one can change to improve them. The statistical techniques students will learn are SPC (Statistical Process Control, used as a proactive tool for investigation rather than its traditional role as a reactive tool), MSA (Measurement Systems Analysis, for determining if your measurement system is capable), FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis), and DOE (Design of Experiments). In addition to these analysis tools, there will be a strong emphasis on the process of data acquisition. To support the process of acquiring the right data and learning the analysis tools, you will do a small (outside) project for the class and a series of in-class simulations. Students will learn to use two additional tools that support the questioning that leads to good data acquisition: process mapping (of the process you will be improving) and thought process mapping (of the process you use to solve the clients problem).
OMG 437. Managing Health Care Operations
The health care industry is undergoing rapid growth as well as rapid structural changes. New technology, changing reimbursement mechanisms, and increased competition create many interesting management problems, not in the least in the area of health care operations. In this course, we will study the operations of various types of health care provider organizations (such as hospitals, HMOs, group practices, nursing homes, etc.) and other participants in the industry (such as insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, suppliers and consulting companies). Topics that will be studied include: patient and provider scheduling, capacity management, providing services and supplies to health care providers, new product development and integrated delivery systems.

Two foundational courses
ACC 401. Corporate Financial Accounting
Corporate financial accounting is concerned with the form and content of the information firms disclose to external parties (e.g., shareholders). In the United States, financial reporting is based on generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) set by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB). GAAP define the accounting methods and disclosure practices that firms select from when providing financial statements to external parties. This course covers these principles and other important financial reporting practices. The primary focus of the course is developing the skills required to interpret and analyze financial information, rather than the skills required to prepare financial statements. Upon completion of the course, students will appreciate how financial accounting information is used in contracts between parties (e.g., lenders and the firm) and to evaluate a firm’s past performance and potential future performance.
FIN 402. Capital Budgeting and Corporate Objectives
This course presents an analysis of the firm’s role in the market system and the nature of the firm’s objectives. Discussed are the implications of the firm’s goal for choice among alternative investment projects (the capital-budgeting problem); introduction to modern portfolio theory and market valuation of risky assets under uncertainty with implications for capital budgeting; analysis and illustration, with problems, of alternative investment criteria; the nature of interest-rate effects and the calculation of net cash flows; analysis of the effects of financial structure and dividend policy on the value of the firm; and the cost of capital.
Advanced courses (select three)
ACC 411. Financial Statement Analysis
An objective of this course is to develop students’ ability to use financial statement information (broadly defined) in various decision-making settings. Various parties routinely use financial statement information to make a variety of economic decisions. Such users include corporate boards, individual and institutional equity investors, financial analysts, creditors, lenders and bond investors. The uses of financial statement information include: 1) evaluation of managerial performance; 2) analysts use financial statement information to perform prospective analysis, which serves as an input into the valuation of a firm’s equity. Analysts make buy, sell, and hold recommendations based on analysis of financial information; 3) creditors and lenders use financial statement information as input into lending decisions. Lenders use financial information to determine the type, amount and terms of a loan, and also the nature of any covenants, and 4) corporations and investment bankers use financial statements to value companies that might be takeover targets.
This course is designed to provide the framework and tools necessary to conduct economic analysis in the above settings. The primary objective is to develop and sharpen students’ analytical ability to analyze financial statements and draw inferences about a firm’s performance and future prospects. Cases and analysis of actual reporting practices are used to achieve the course objectives.
FIN 411. Investments
Investments includes discussion of the efficient-markets theory of the dynamic behavior of prices in speculative markets, along with empirical evidence for the validity of the theory; evaluation of the implications of the efficient-markets theory for the profitability of alternative investment strategies; exploration of the implications of portfolio theory for equilibrium asset prices and the measurement of risk; emphasis on the empirical evidence for various mean-variance and multifactor models of asset pricing and the use of these models for evaluating portfolio performance; and introduction to special topics in financial markets, such as arbitrage pricing theory, options and futures contracts.
FIN 434. Investment Management and Trading Strategies
This course explores selected topics in the management of equity portfolios. Course content may vary from year to year. Topics include: active portfolio management with particular emphasis on risk analysis, multifactor risk/return models and performance evaluation and style analysis. The objective of this course is to undertake a rigorous study of fixed-income securities and markets. A variety of fixed-income securities will be discussed including coupon bonds, callable and putable bonds, sinking fund provisions, and floating rate notes. Interest rate derivatives such as forwards and futures on fixed-income securities, bond options, options on bond futures, caps, floors, and collars will also be discussed. In addition, we will study some tools that are useful in bond portfolio management including horizon analysis, duration, optimization techniques for constructing bond portfolios and modes for pricing fixed-income securities. While the perspective of this course is from the viewpoint of a bond investor, a person in corporate finance needs to understand similar material. Evaluating an investment in a fixed income security is the mirror image of the problem faced by a corporation in deciding whether or not to issue a bond.

This course deals with the issues that arise in designing and managing distribution channels and salesforces. A central theme of the course is that these entities perform both a tactical/operational function as well as a strategic function and that both aspects need to be considered in their design and management. The course looks at a number of design options, ranging from direct distribution through a salesforce to a complex, multi-layered channel consisting of several layers of intermediaries such as wholesalers and retailers.
Managing a channel requires an understanding of the competitive and cooperative aspects of manufacturer-distributor relationships. The course evaluates the efficiency of contractual arrangements like exclusive territories, exclusive dealing requirements and resale-price maintenance from the manufacturers and the distributors point of view. To obtain balance between depth and breadth, the Simon School has developed an interdisciplinary program. The School is small enough to avoid decentralization of study into departments. Faculty Members are Accessible to Their Students.One-to-one contact with faculty members is important in all phases of the educational process, but is particularly vital at the thesis-writing stage. Executive M.B.A. Program The Regions Most Rigorous EMBA Program Is Now More Flexible!
Alternating Week Format. The Simon EMBA program will now meet on Friday and Saturday every other week. This new, more flexible format reduces by half the amount of workdays lost by students and their employers. Students (especially those from out of town) will save substantially on program meeting and travel costs and experience greater flexibility to accommodate the various other professional and personal demands on their time.
Opportunity for Shortened Program Length. The standard program length is still 22 months. However, by offering optional classes in the summer or at night, students are now able to complete an EMBA in as little as 19 months.
Opportunities for Elective Study. Students now have the ability to focus their education on an area that interests them most. During the last quarter of the program, pursue greater specialization in a particular area of study (e.g., marketing, strategy, CIS/operations, health sciences management). Joint Degrees allow students to earn two graduate degrees simultaneously. Typically, the period of study is shorter than if each degree was pursued independently. The Illinois MBA has developed several joint degree agreements with other departments on campus.

The Accounting and Information Management (AIM) Area currently offers a number of its courses available online. These online courses are available to all students whether they are doing most of their coursework online or on-campus. Students are able to complete all of the requirements for the M.S. degree in Accounting and Information Management online . Students interested in completing their degree online follow the same admission procedures as on-campus students.
Students who are preparing to take the CPA exam should be aware that the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy requires that 15 of the 30 hours of accounting required to sit for the CPA exam must be completed on-campus. Students may transfer up to 12 hours of approved coursework from another institution. Students who want to transfer credit for courses they plan to take at another institution must submit for pre-approval early in the semester before they wish to complete the course. Students residing outside of the State of Texas should check with their respective state boards of public accountancy to find out the requirements in their states to sit for the CPA exam.
The titles of the AIM courses that will be taught online are provided in the table below. The table indicates when the courses will be available. The table also indicates whether the course qualifies for credit towards the 30 hours of accounting or 3 hours of ethics required by the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy.

The Master of Laws (LLM)Degree OverviewThe LLM program at Duke Law School is designed to introduce foreign law graduates to the legal system of the United States and to provide the opportunity to take advanced courses in specialized areas of the law. LLM students are welcome to make selections from the large number of courses represented in the curriculum. With the exception of two required courses, Distinctive Aspects of American Law and U.S. Legal Analysis, Research and Writing for International Students, all classes are taken with J.D. students. The number of credits required for the LLM degree is 21, but many students exceed the required number. Students may also take courses in other parts of the university, like the Fuqua School of Business or the Sanford Institute of Public Policy. The program of study is normally completed in one academic year, which begins for all new students in late August.
Most LLM students at Duke are professionals with two or more years of experience at well-known law firms. They are also judges, prosecutors, academics, members of government ministries, corporations, or financial institutions. The LLM program usually includes a small number of talented, very recent law graduates as well. The 2006-07 LL.M. class has an enrollment of 77 students from 27 countries.
Applicants must hold a first degree in law from an accredited institution outside the United States. The law degree should be the equivalent of the J.D. or LL.B. degree. Correspondence course degrees will not be considered for admission to the LL.M. program.
All applications will receive very careful scrutiny. Admissions will be based on the following criteria:

MBA/MA in International Relations Requirements
Completion of this dual degree program requires a total of 80 credits. Students must complete all of the degree requirements for the MA in International Relations (32 credits) in addition to at least 40 credits in the Graduate School of Management. Up to eight credit hours of the IR electives may be fulfilled through GSM courses. Admission into this dual degree program requires one application through the Graduate School of Management indicating on the application that applicants are pursuing the MBA/MA in International Relations.

MBA/MS in Manufacturing Engineering and Management RequirementsA total of 80 credits is required for the MBA/MS in Manufacturing Engineering dual degree program. Students must take at least 40 credits from the Graduate School of Management and meet the MS requirements for manufacturing engineering. Each course may be used to meet the requirements of one degree only. For courses counted toward the engineering MS, a student must complete 36 credits with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 or ‘B’. The remaining four (4) credits can be taken at either the Graduate School of Management or the College of Engineering. Candidates are encouraged to contact the Manufacturing graduate programs coordinator who will help them plan their curricula with an advisor at the time of first enrollment in the dual degree program. Applicants need only submit the Graduate School of Management application and indicate the interest to pursue the MBA/MS in Manufacturing Engineering.

MBA/MA in Economics RequirementsFollowing acceptance into the joint program, candidates normally register for three semesters in the Graduate School of Management (GSM) and two semesters in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GRS), but they may cross-register and take courses in both Schools during any give semester. Students must successfully complete a minimum of 40 credits in GSM and 24 credits in the Department of Economics; the other 16 credits may be taken in GSM, the Department of Economics, or, with prior approval, elsewhere in the University. Applicants interested in the MBA/MA in Economics need only submit the GSM application indicating the interest in dual degree. Please note that when applying to this dual degree program one recommendation should be from a former professor.

MBA/MA in Medical ScienceRequirementsStudents apply by completing an application to the Division of Graduate Medical Sciences and an application to the School of Management, indicating on each application that admission to the dual degree program is desired. Letters of recommendation, test scores and transcripts must accompany one of the applications and are shared by both admissions committees.
Students already enrolled in either program who decide to pursue a dual degree may, with the counsel of their advisor, apply for formal admission to the other School. Upon acceptance, the director of the dual degree program reviews the applicant's transcript and advises what courses may be taken to complete the combined dual degree requirements.
Candidates usually register for two semesters in the Division of Graduate Medical Sciences (GMS) and then register in the Graduate School of Management (GSM), but may cross-register and take courses in both Schools in any semester.

MBA/MPH in Management and Public Health Requirements
The dual degree in MBA/MPH in Management and Public Health requires completion of a total of 85 credits, 52 from the School of Management and 33 credits in residence in the School of Public Health. Sixteen of the 33 SPH credits must be from the Health Services Department. Applicants must apply simultaneously to the School of Public Health and the School of Management. Separate applications to both Schools are required.

MD/MBA Requirements
Students should express their interest in the MD/MBA program when they apply to medical school. Students will complete the first three years of the medical school curriculum and then spend their fourth year fully integrated into the MBA program at the School of Management within the Health Sector Management Program. During this fourth year, they will take 36 credit-hours of management courses with an emphasis on health sector issues. To earn both degrees, students must successfully complete the required classroom and clinical coursework for the MD degree, the required coursework for the MBA degree, and a 400-hour field placement in a health sector organization (taken during the summer between the fourth and fifth years). Students must earn the grade of Pass or Honor in all MED courses and must maintain a grade point average of 2.7 (on a scale of 4.0) in MBA courses. Please note that students interested in the MD/MBA must take both the MCAT in addition to the GMAT.

1999 - In response once again to rapid changes in business and technology, the Stern MBA curriculum is retooled to better equip students with the broad-based knowledge, global perspective and cross-functional skills employers most want in an MBA.
Prominent investment banker and Home Depot founder Kenneth G. Langone (MBA 1960) donates $10 million to Stern. The part-time MBA program is renamed the Langone program in his honor.
Stern anticipated its 100th birthday in the year 2000 by launching a $100 million Centennial Campaign, the School’s most ambitious fundraising effort to date. The campaign doubles Stern’s endowment, the number of named professorships, and the level of student financial aid.

It also includes design of functional and environmentally compatible facilities and infrastructure. Within this broad context, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is especially concerned with:
Better understanding of natural cycles, systems, and processes relevant to human activities Use of natural analogs to help design new materials, industrial processes, and infrastructure systems Development of new building and transportation technologies Advances in information infrastructure and logistics Creation of attractive and sustainable physical environments An education in civil and environmental engineering provides an excellent foundation for careers in fields as diverse as engineering design, education, law, medicine, and public health, as well as for graduate study in engineering and science. Our graduates teach and carry out research in universities, work for large firms, start their own businesses, and take positions in government and nonprofit organizations. As pressures on limited natural resources grow, there will be increasing demand for engineers who understand how to make best use of these resources in the products and services they design. The department's undergraduate program recognizes this need by providing background in science and engineering fundamentals while also emphasizing hands-on design projects and case studies that provide context and motivation. The department offers two designated undergraduate degrees accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). The Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering provides a solid foundation for practice in both classical and newly developing areas of civil engineering, including structural analysis and design, engineering materials, geotechnical analysis and design, sustainable built environments, and transportation and logistics. The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering Science emphasizes the fundamental physical, chemical, and biological processes necessary for understanding the interactions between man and the environment. Issues considered include the provision of clean and reliable water supplies, flood forecasting and protection, development of renewable and nonrenewable energy sources, causes and implications of climate change, and the impact of human activities on natural cycles. Both programs provide awareness of the sociopolitical context in which civil and environmental engineering problems are solved. Premedical students may satisfy medical school entrance requirements while earning the accredited degree in environmental engineering science with proper planning of their program. A third degree is offered for students who want more flexibility. Typical examples are students who will pursue careers in medicine, law, or scientific research.
The undergraduate programs in civil engineering and environmental engineering science share a common sophomore year that emphasizes mathematics, mechanics, ecology, and design. The ecology sequence begins by considering how natural systems work and then turns to a consideration of interactions between these systems and human activities. This sequence provides a scientific context for a consideration of sustainable design in subsequent subjects. Sophomore students from all programs work together in teams on design projects that synthesize concepts taught in the core subjects. In the junior and senior years, students from the two programs concentrate on disciplinary subjects that provide depth in each specialty. During the final term of the senior year, all students come together again in an advanced design subject that integrates lessons learned throughout the undergraduate education. There is ample room in the program for electives and minors that can be used to tailor each student's program to individual needs.
At the graduate level, the department offers two complementary but distinct types of programs. First, research-oriented doctoral and master's programs advance fundamental understanding and develop innovative approaches to engineering problems. Such programs prepare professionals for positions of leadership in research and teaching. Second, practice-oriented master's degrees introduce the political, economic, and cultural factors that influence social priorities, and prepare students to function as members of interdisciplinary teams. These programs add technical depth and professional skills beyond the four-year bachelor's degree.

Computer Science at Caltech
The computer science department at Caltech consists of a small group of students, faculty and staff. The small size and collegial atmosphere at Caltech facilitates close working relationships among faculty and students, and encourages novel interdisciplinary research. Students are encouraged to tailor their programs of courses and research to fit their specific needs. Students often collaborate on large projects, but each student is treated as an important individual, with unique goals, drives and needs.
Research emphases are in algorithms; communication protocols, concurrent computation, and networks; graphics and human-computer interaction; novel computational substrates, including quantum mechanical computers and molecular computers; VLSI, with a specific emphasis on asynchronous and analog VLSI; high-confidence systems, including fault tolerance, program verification, and security; information theory; learning theory; computer vision; and large-scale scientific computing. Projects frequently involve connections with other disciplines such as Physics, Biology, Mathematics, Mechanics, Control and Dynamical Systems, and Electrical Engineering.
Undergraduates are encouraged to do research. Many have papers in conferences or journals. The opportunity for close collaboration with faculty and graduate students on research, the flexibility of developing your own research and course structure, and outstanding facilities, makes Caltech an ideal environment for motivated undergraduates.
Graduate study in Computer Science is a full-time program. Students are admitted only with the Ph.D. as the degree objective, although an M.S. degree is a required step in the program. Students join a research group and participate in research from the very beginning, so it is important that applicants have a defined area of interest before applying. The first year emphasizes course work and master's thesis research. Students in their second year complete their master's thesis preliminary to the candidacy examination. After passing the candidacy exam, students devote their time to research on the doctoral dissertation. The program requires a minimum of three academic years of residence.
Applications are accepted once per year, no later than January 1st, and reviewed at that time for admission and financial aid for admission the following September. In order for all candidates to receive equal consideration, unofficial evaluations of likelihood admission will not be made. Applications are reviewed after all credentials, including recommendation letters and official copies of test scores, have been received. GRE scores are required, with a subject test of the student's choice strongly recommended. It is strongly recommended that applicants take the GRE in October to allow enough time for Caltech to receive the scores by January. Early submissions are encouraged as application reviews are already in progress in December.
Applications are encouraged from fields other than computer science, but applicants should be aware that the program is mathematically and scientifically oriented. Students who hold a Ph.D. degree from another institution are not normally admitted to graduate standing at Caltech to pursue a second Ph.D. degree.

History"Lawyers in the Best Sense"A Brief History of Cornell Law School
When Andrew Dickson White began to lay plans for a law department at Cornell University, he wrote that he wanted to educate “not swarms of hastily prepared pettifoggers, but a fair number of well-trained, large-minded, morally-based lawyers in the best sense...” He hoped graduates of the school would become “a blessing to the country, at the bar, on the bench, and in various public bodies.”
“We wish the new school success,” the Albany Law Journal noted acidly, when it learned of White’s plans, “but we do not expect it.” There were only a few law schools of any consequence in the country when Cornell’s department admitted its first students in 1887; most young men (they were almost always men) clerked in law offices, and studied on the job.
A high school diploma was not a prerequisite for entry to Cornell’s new department; tuition was $75 a year for three hours of classes a day. Students were thirsty for knowledge: “We had to drive them out of the library at night, and had a hard time answering their questions the next morning,” wrote faculty member Charles Evans Hughes. (Hughes, who later served as chief justice of the Supreme Court, then as secretary of state, said he’d “enjoyed teaching most of all.”)
The school’s growth mirrored that of legal schooling in the country; the number of law students in the U.S. tripled over the next ten years. The law department’s standards rose. By 1917, admission required at least two years of university education. World War I saw a halt in the stream of graduates, but students returned after the Armistice. Legal study was made a graduate degree in 1924, and the department of law became a professional school. In 1925, the trustees voted to give the new institution a new name: Cornell Law School.
By the end of World War II, law students who had fought overseas brought back internationally-scaled aspirations. In response, the Law School entered the arena of international legal studies in earnest.
The faculty grew in strength and numbers over the next thirty years; graduates who had prospered endowed professorships, and research flourished. Classes in legal history and philosophy found places in the catalogue of second- and third-year elective courses. So that students’ more practical legal training might not suffer, the Legal Aid Clinic was established to give students the opportunity to confront real legal problems in the real world; other clinics followed.
Today, students still come to Cornell Law School from nearby upstate New York communities; but most now come from much farther away, Florida, Tulsa, L.A., Santo Domingo, and China. When they graduate, they join major law firms, or corporate law departments; they work as public defenders, or help AIDS victims win discrimination cases; they teach law and publish books. And Andrew White’s dream has grown in a way he could hardly have anticipated, the school’s graduates serve not just this country, but several dozen others, as well. International graduates return to their own countries to posts in government and on the bench. The Albany Law Journal, thankfully, was wrong; the Law School’s success is undisputed.

What is a PhD?The term PhD is short for Doctor of Philosophy. It is frequently referred to as a Doctorate. As a PhD student you will be expected to pursue structured, supervised research into one of the many business-related fields in which the Management School has expertise. The minimum research period for a full-time PhD is 3 years. At the end of this period you will be expected to write an extended thesis, demonstrating evidence of your capacity to pursue scholarly research. The results of your research should make an original contribution to knowledge and be of a standard appropriate for publication.
Why study for a PhD?Before applying for a PhD you need to be sure that you have a keen personal interest in the topic you will be researching - and an interest in the process of research. You will need a strong academic background with a good first degree and the motivation to pursue your research for a minimum of 3 years.
Candidates who complete PhDs typically embark on academic careers; others join research organisations; some join consulting firms and other employers. PhD graduates from Lancaster have obtained senior academic, research and consultancy positions throughout the world - from Kathmandu School of Management, to the University of Malaysia, to HEC Montreal and Middle East Technical University in Turkey, as well as leading business schools throughout the UK.

ECP - Thunderbird moves further into East Asia

Thunderbird recently has taken several dramatic steps into the world’s most dynamic growth region – East Asia. The School has a new dual-degree program with a top business school in Taipei; a student exchange program with a Beijing university; a non-degree certificate program in Beijing, Shanghai and other cities; and has hired a director of Regional Initiatives based in Singapore.
“East Asia is one of the world’s most economically dynamic regions,” says Thunderbird President Ángel Cabrera. “By expanding our presence in Asia, we can strengthen the learning options for our students and further solidify our long-standing expertise and presence in this critical market.”
In Taipei, Thunderbird has partnered with Soochow University to offer a dual degree that allows students to earn an MBA from Soochow and a Master of Global Management from Thunderbird. The 2 ½-year program, which begins this fall, requires 30 credits of study the first year at Soochow, followed by 30 credits of study at Thunderbird the second year. Students then return to Soochow, a private university with approximately 13,000 students, to complete their theses in the summer and fall.
The agreement also allows undergraduates in the final semester at Soochow the opportunity to take courses in one of Thunderbird’s new master’s degree programs -- Master of Science in Global Management or Master of Arts in Global Affairs and Management – and for Soochow Executive MBA students to enroll in one of Thunderbird’s Summerim or Winterim courses. Classes for Thunderbird's MA in Global Affairs and Management and the MS in Global Management begin this fall.
During the break between the spring and fall trimesters, Thunderbird offers Summerim and Winterim courses, trip up to 20 days to spots around the world where students have in-depth cultural experiences and private meetings with corporate and political leaders. In January, more than 100 Thunderbird MBA students gathered for Winterims in places like Costa Rica, South Africa, Switzerland, Mexico, China and Jordan.
In March, Thunderbird signed an agreement with the Enterprise Research Institute of the Development Research Center of the State Council of China to offer the School’s first formal non-degree Corporate Learning certificate program in China. “Going Global Entrepreneurially” is a 12-month program for Chinese managers, who will meet several times a month in Beijing, Shanghai and other Chinese cities. The first program begins in September.
Earlier this year, Thunderbird also established an exchange program partnership with Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, one of the most prestigious and selective universities in China, often referred to as the “MIT of China.” The campus is in northwest Beijing, in the Haidian District, which is an area designed for universities, and is on the former site of Qing Dynasty Royal Gardens. The student exchange will begin with the fall trimester.
With the Tsinghua Univeristy parntership, Thunderbird has exchange agreements with more than 15 top business schools around the world. Participating in an exchange program satisfies the Thunderbird Global Experience, which requires that a student have at least one study-abroad internship outside their home country.
In an effort to further expand its Asian operations, Thunderbird named Michele von Rautenkranz ‘88 as director of Regional Initiatives, Southeast Asia. Rautenkranz has responsibility for Thunderbird activities in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Brunei and Singapore, where she will be based.
