We welcome enquiries and applications from well-qualified graduates throughout the world who wish to join this thriving research community. We are committed to providing PhD students with a sound foundation in research methodology, and this is reflected in the research training programmes we offer.
To find out about the many options for MPhil and PhD research at LUMS, see Types of PhD Programme.
What is a PhD?The term PhD is short for Doctor of Philosophy. It is frequently referred to as a Doctorate. As a PhD student you will be expected to pursue structured, supervised research into one of the many business-related fields in which the Management School has expertise. The minimum research period for a full-time PhD is 3 years. At the end of this period you will be expected to write an extended thesis, demonstrating evidence of your capacity to pursue scholarly research. The results of your research should make an original contribution to knowledge and be of a standard appropriate for publication.
Why study for a PhD?Before applying for a PhD you need to be sure that you have a keen personal interest in the topic you will be researching - and an interest in the process of research. You will need a strong academic background with a good first degree and the motivation to pursue your research for a minimum of 3 years.
Candidates who complete PhDs typically embark on academic careers; others join research organisations; some join consulting firms and other employers. PhD graduates from Lancaster have obtained senior academic, research and consultancy positions throughout the world - from Kathmandu School of Management, to the University of Malaysia, to HEC Montreal and Middle East Technical University in Turkey, as well as leading business schools throughout the UK.
Increasingly a PhD in business or management is valued in management consultancy and professional research. A PhD from Lancaster University Management School can provide a springboard for careers in these fields. For more information, see our PhD Alumni Profiles.
Other research degreesFor applicants who cannot afford to spend the minimum of 3 years of research necessary for a PhD, or for those who wish to acquire a grounding in research methodologies, we offer MPhil, MA (by research) and MRes degrees. Types of PhD Programme provides more information.
