TGK - The Darden MBA Program

The Darden MBA Program

The Darden mission, to produce leaders in the world of practical affairs, involves far more than a collection of courses spread across 21 months. The program leading to the Darden MBA is a rigorous experience, a proving ground for only the most dedicated students pursuing careers in general management. Graduates of the Darden Experience often recall their time in the program as the hardest two years they ever loved.
Built around the Case Method of instruction, the Darden Experience involves daily, discussion-based learning in which students are active collaborators in their business education. The program also involves a firm grounding in principled behavior. Long before the rise of corporate scandals, the Darden School taught the inextricable link between business and ethics. Here, students take on the challenge of integrating ethical thinking into critical business decision-making.
From this site, you can access extensive information about the unique Darden community. Learn about the first-year and second-year programs, and the Case Method. Take a virtual tour of Darden and the University of Virginia. Discover life at Darden and school traditions such as First Coffee, a daily eye-opening experience. Review our joint degree and international study programs. Explore the many career-focused student clubs and organizations.
Earning an MBA at Darden Earning an MBA involves more than learning business skills; it’s about becoming something more — becoming a leader. Darden offers programs and research that develop leaders who are skilled at turning ideas into action. Darden MBAs learn to think, decide, act — and lead others. Our graduates lead organizations in a myriad of industries, markets, countries, and cultures. To prepare students for the challenges of business leadership, Darden takes a unique approach to management education, based on a distinctive set of core values.
The Darden program is an experience, not just a collection of courses. From the first day you will discover a distinct difference in how and what you learn. The "how" is the case method and the accompanying dynamic classroom environment. The case method requires you to think, decide and act. You get to test your ideas and actions in an environment that fosters healthy exchange and debate. Every class demands that you be actively engaged in the learning process. To be engaged requires that you come to class prepared to excel everyday. Aristotle offered this view on excellence: "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit."
At Darden you develop the habits that form the basis of success. The "what" also reflects the Darden difference. Our approach builds functional expertise with an enterprise perspective. You learn the theory and techniques underpinning functional skills, but more than that, you will see all of this come together in a real business setting. It is not just about calculating a net present value or an economic-order quantity, but an understanding of how these things are implemented in a decision-making environment.
Good decisions are the result of an understanding of the total enterprise and, like anything else, our skills improve by doing. Beyond just "the how" and "the what" there are other dimensions that define the unique Darden experience: Our approach to teamwork, our devotion to honor and integrity, a committed faculty, a global view, and a spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship.
Darden Core Values
Darden’s approach to education reflects foundational values established 50 years ago. Our core values continue to guide the school. The Darden MBA program develops decisive, action-oriented, analytical leaders through a continuing commitment to:
Discussion-based pedagogy in which students and faculty share the responsibility for learning Energy, hard work and a passion for excellence Collaboration and a climate of trust supported by honor and Integrity Deep connections to business Global diversity
Criteria for AdmissionApplication RequirementsInformation for International ApplicantsApplication Essays
The Darden Admissions Committee evaluates three broad areas in considering candidates for admission:
AcademicsThe Committee looks for evidence of superior academic performance and intellectual ability, and for non-native English speakers, evidence of proficient English skills for success in the program.
While no specific undergraduate major is required for admission, coursework in accounting and statistics is highly recommended prior to matriculation. Transfer credits from other institutions cannot be used to satisfy the requirements of the Darden MBA degree.
Professional ExperienceDarden seeks innovative students who demonstrate potential for action-oriented leadership in the world of practical affairs. The average number of years of full-time work experience is approximately four years. Please bear in mind that Darden does not require a minimum number of years' work experience prior to entering the MBA program, and it is important for you to assess your own readiness when deciding to apply. Successful candidates are able to demonstrate strength in our criteria regardless of the number of years of their work experience.
Personal Qualities & CharacteristicsThe Admissions Committee looks for breadth of life experiences, an interest in community service, and characteristics that cannot be quantitatively measured, such as motivation, maturity, integrity, and self-awareness. Factors such as international exposure, diversity, and culture/gender sensitivity are also taken into consideration. In addition, we value a commitment to ongoing personal and professional development.
Interviews play a critical role in assessing candidates for admission. We look for individuals with strong interpersonal and communication skills, as these are essential for success in a case-method pedagogy as well as positions of broad managerial responsibility.
Note to Early Action ApplicantsThe Early Action round is ideal for applicants/reapplicants that have completed their research about MBA programs and have decided that Darden is their first choice. Early Action allows applicants to secure their offer of admission to Darden by February 1, 2008. This offer is non-binding. Applying in the Early Action Round guarantees that you will be considered for all scholarships, including the Jefferson and Batten fellowships. See the Financial Aid website further details.

EB - Kent State University - Financial Engineering

Financial Engineering For The FutureFinancial engineering is the application of mathematical methods to the solution of risk management problems in finance. Financial engineering uses tools from finance, applied mathematics, computer science, statistics and economic theory. Investment banks, hedge funds, insurance companies, corporate risk managers and regulatory agencies apply the methods of financial engineering to such problems as derivative securities valuation, risk management, strategic planning and dynamic investment strategies. As the pace of financial innovation increases, the need for highly qualified people with specific training in financial engineering intensifies.
Kent State is committed to partnering with corporations, foundations and the investment banking industry to meet the need for financial engineers. We are the only institution in Ohio to offer a Master of Science in Financial Engineering (MSFE). The program is administered by both the Finance and Mathematics departments. Our state-of-the art on-campus Olga Mural Financial Engineering Trading Floor simulates market trading conditions and provides hands-on training in financial analysis and risk management. The trading room includes 25 high-end PC stations, specialized software and on-site technical support, and is a key component of the new interdisciplinary financial engineering master's program.

Financial Engineering at Kent State UniversityThe interdisciplinary Master of Science in Financial Engineering (MSFE) degree is designed for students with strong quantitative backgrounds who have goals of becoming risk management officers, derivatives analysts or traders. The program is a demanding one and it requires the completion of 36 credit hours of coursework, including an industry-based project. It combines strong quantitative skills from mathematics, including probability theory and numerical computing, with risk management and dynamic valuation skills from finance. In addition it draws on tools from applied mathematics, computer science, statistics, and economic theory. Investment banks, hedge funds, insurance companies, corporate treasuries, and regulatory agencies apply the methods of financial engineering to such problems as derivative securities valuation, portfolio structuring, risk management, and scenario simulation. The program emphasizes applied skills in the area of financial engineering, while still providing the necessary theoretical background. The suggested coursework fits within the guidelines established by the International Association of Financial Engineers.

the opportunity to meet with and learn from managers in other organisations
What are the benefits of the MSc Management?enhanced knowledge and skills
confidence in your abilities
improved performance in your current role

distinguish yourself from candidates that have only an undergraduate degree Intense competition and changing customer expectations have meant significant changes in the nature of organisations; networks, partnerships, strategic alliances, mergers and de-mergers, all making the manager's role more complex and demanding.
This newly designed flexible programme will enable you to develop management capabilities in order to complement your specialist expertise, developing and continually upgrading your portfolio of skills and knowledge.
The programme will enable you to link theory and practice relevant to managing in today's organisations. The staff who teach on this programme have a wide range of experience of researching, consulting and working with a variety of organisations including those in the private, public and not for profit sectors.
How is the programme structured? We expect most students to complete the full Master's programme, which includes taught modules at Certificate and Diploma phases (normally six core modules and two elective modules chosen from a variety of options) and a final dissertation module in the Master's phase.
If for any reason you are unable to complete the programme you can leave with a recognised university qualification providing you have built up sufficient credits (either Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma) and you may be able to return to complete the full Master's programme at a later date.
Entry to the programme is normally at Postgraduate Certificate level with most students commencing in late September each year. The six core modules at Certificate and Diploma phases cover the areas of:
Finance Marketing Operations and Information Management Human Resource Management Organisational Analysis Strategic Management In addition you will normally be able to choose two electives from a variety of options covering contemporary issues in management such as:
Consulting with Organisations Managing Change Digital Business Strategy Innovation Services Marketing Project Management Finance Leadership
In the final Master's phase you will undertake a dissertation module where you will be able to carry out a research project on a topic of your choice.
When will I have to attend? This programme has been designed to offer maximum flexibility and you can choose when you attend, depending on the speed at which you want to proceed through the programme. It is possible to study in the evening, or by block sessions, or via a combination of the two. You could expect to complete the programme in 33 months, or 24 via the fast track route.
The evening session runs from 4.00pm - 8.30pm (with a half hour break) one day per week. The three-day block sessions will take place during October, mid November, late January/early February and mid March, usually on a Wednesday to Friday. Prior to starting the programme additional information will be sent to you, enabling you to choose how you wish to study. Those wishing to fast-track through this programme should discuss this with the Programme Director at the time of application as this route is dependent on student numbers and will require additional attendance on block modules in the early summer.
The DissertationThis Masters programme places great emphasis on a dissertation completed during the summer term. You will receive research methods training during the year to equip you to undertake a significant piece of international management research. Your topic may be practical or theoretical, and once you have identified your proposed study a dissertation supervisor guides your progress.
Entry criteriaYou should have:
A degree or equivalent business professional qualification, or
An HND in Business Studies or equivalent business professional award at NVQ 4, plus two years of relevant work experience or
At least two years in a management role with in-house management education/development. You may be interviewed prior to acceptance and asked to undertake an additional pre-entry assessment.
How will I be assessed? The programme primarily uses continuous assessment, chiefly through marked assignments which are either organisation or role focused and of great practical benefit to you as an individual and to your organisation.
How will I learn? You will be encouraged to learn through a wide variety of participative and learner-centred methods which include; case studies, syndicate-based exercises, group experiential learning exercises, presentations, formal lectures, and self-directed independent study.
