EWH - Financial Analysis - Simon Business School

Financial AnalysisHighlighting one of today's fastest growing and most lucrative industries, the Financial Analysis Certificate explores the challenges and rewards of financial accounting and reporting, financial statement analysis and investment strategies. At the Simon School, which is highly renowned for its research and scholarship in the area of finance, we offer students state-of-the-art techniques for financial analysis and market research. Students learn to formulate and solve critical finance problems and obtain vital information from the many financial market databases.
Two foundational courses
ACC 401. Corporate Financial Accounting
Corporate financial accounting is concerned with the form and content of the information firms disclose to external parties (e.g., shareholders). In the United States, financial reporting is based on generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) set by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB). GAAP define the accounting methods and disclosure practices that firms select from when providing financial statements to external parties. This course covers these principles and other important financial reporting practices. The primary focus of the course is developing the skills required to interpret and analyze financial information, rather than the skills required to prepare financial statements. Upon completion of the course, students will appreciate how financial accounting information is used in contracts between parties (e.g., lenders and the firm) and to evaluate a firm’s past performance and potential future performance.
FIN 402. Capital Budgeting and Corporate Objectives
This course presents an analysis of the firm’s role in the market system and the nature of the firm’s objectives. Discussed are the implications of the firm’s goal for choice among alternative investment projects (the capital-budgeting problem); introduction to modern portfolio theory and market valuation of risky assets under uncertainty with implications for capital budgeting; analysis and illustration, with problems, of alternative investment criteria; the nature of interest-rate effects and the calculation of net cash flows; analysis of the effects of financial structure and dividend policy on the value of the firm; and the cost of capital.
Advanced courses (select three)
ACC 411. Financial Statement Analysis
An objective of this course is to develop students’ ability to use financial statement information (broadly defined) in various decision-making settings. Various parties routinely use financial statement information to make a variety of economic decisions. Such users include corporate boards, individual and institutional equity investors, financial analysts, creditors, lenders and bond investors. The uses of financial statement information include: 1) evaluation of managerial performance; 2) analysts use financial statement information to perform prospective analysis, which serves as an input into the valuation of a firm’s equity. Analysts make buy, sell, and hold recommendations based on analysis of financial information; 3) creditors and lenders use financial statement information as input into lending decisions. Lenders use financial information to determine the type, amount and terms of a loan, and also the nature of any covenants, and 4) corporations and investment bankers use financial statements to value companies that might be takeover targets.
This course is designed to provide the framework and tools necessary to conduct economic analysis in the above settings. The primary objective is to develop and sharpen students’ analytical ability to analyze financial statements and draw inferences about a firm’s performance and future prospects. Cases and analysis of actual reporting practices are used to achieve the course objectives.
FIN 411. Investments
Investments includes discussion of the efficient-markets theory of the dynamic behavior of prices in speculative markets, along with empirical evidence for the validity of the theory; evaluation of the implications of the efficient-markets theory for the profitability of alternative investment strategies; exploration of the implications of portfolio theory for equilibrium asset prices and the measurement of risk; emphasis on the empirical evidence for various mean-variance and multifactor models of asset pricing and the use of these models for evaluating portfolio performance; and introduction to special topics in financial markets, such as arbitrage pricing theory, options and futures contracts.
FIN 434. Investment Management and Trading Strategies
This course explores selected topics in the management of equity portfolios. Course content may vary from year to year. Topics include: active portfolio management with particular emphasis on risk analysis, multifactor risk/return models and performance evaluation and style analysis. The course also considers issues and evidence on different forms of market structure and trading systems, including the role of specialists/ dealers, optimal trading behavior for institutions, price impact of trades, and related information technology. Extensive use is made of investment software.
or FIN 448. Fixed-Income Securities
The objective of this course is to undertake a rigorous study of fixed-income securities and markets. A variety of fixed-income securities will be discussed including coupon bonds, callable and putable bonds, sinking fund provisions, and floating rate notes. Interest rate derivatives such as forwards and futures on fixed-income securities, bond options, options on bond futures, caps, floors, and collars will also be discussed. In addition, we will study some tools that are useful in bond portfolio management including horizon analysis, duration, optimization techniques for constructing bond portfolios and modes for pricing fixed-income securities. While the perspective of this course is from the viewpoint of a bond investor, a person in corporate finance needs to understand similar material. Evaluating an investment in a fixed income security is the mirror image of the problem faced by a corporation in deciding whether or not to issue a bond.

or MKT 435. Distribution Channels and Salesforce Management
This course deals with the issues that arise in designing and managing distribution channels and salesforces. A central theme of the course is that these entities perform both a tactical/operational function as well as a strategic function and that both aspects need to be considered in their design and management. The course looks at a number of design options, ranging from direct distribution through a salesforce to a complex, multi-layered channel consisting of several layers of intermediaries such as wholesalers and retailers.
Managing a channel requires an understanding of the competitive and cooperative aspects of manufacturer-distributor relationships. The course evaluates the efficiency of contractual arrangements like exclusive territories, exclusive dealing requirements and resale-price maintenance from the manufacturers and the distributors point of view. Finally, an assortment of contemporary issues in channelssuch as everyday low pricing versus promotional pricing, slotting allowances, the shift in bargaining power from manufacturers to retailers for consumer goods, growth of store-labeled brands, the role of the Internet and new forms of retailingare discussed. In addition, a number of modeling and quantitative techniques are studied that help implement the strategies discussed in the course.
On the salesforce front, the course delves into a number of critical issues such as performance measurement, territory decision, quotas and compensation design.
Two advanced courses
ECM 437. Marketing on the Internet
This course examines the major issues involved in marketing on the Internet. Among the topics studied are: new product opportunities on the Internet; the changed role of advertising; the Internet as a two-way communication medium with consumers; targeting individual consumers; word-of-mouth among consumers on the Internet; the Internet as a distribution channel; and marketing research on the Internet.

EU - Ph.D. Program at Simon Business School

Why Pursue a Ph.D. at Simon?

Simon Has Much to OfferOur students are among the best-trained graduates in their fields. They are highly sought after for academic positions for their strong analytical skills and research performance. From the very beginning of their training, there is an emphasis on the creation of a strong foundation from which new ideas and effective research can grow. The first year consists of a heavy course load in mathematics, economics and statistics. The important skills our students learn from these courses are hard to acquire later if not learned before research training. Further, this allows students in subsequent years to acquire a deeper understanding of the state-of-the-art concepts in their discipline chosen, and to quickly develop strong skills necessary to conduct original research.
Our Training is CompleteWe admit a diverse student body from a variety of academic backgrounds, including: finance, mathematics, economics, statistics, engineering, computer science, law, physics, accounting, business administration and management undergraduate and graduate programs. Students possessing strong backgrounds in quantitative and technical fields will have a competitive advantage in our Ph.D. Program, though degrees in these fields are not required. We provide all the necessary training beyond the basic baccalaureate degree.
All of an applicant’s abilities are consided in admittance. We look for students who are analytical, creative and interested in studying business problems and trends. We carefully evaluate each application to find candidates who might prove to be "diamonds in the rough."
Our Placement is OutstandingMost of our graduates are employed before they defend their dissertations. 91 percent of these placements are in academic positions, with a 58 percent majority of our graduates in top business schools (as ranked in U.S. News & World Report 2006).
20% of our graduates get their first job in a top-10 ranked business school.
Life-Long BenefitsA career in research and academia provides a satisfying life-long career with outstanding intellectual, social and economic benefits. Economic benefits are substantial. Business school professors are the highest paid in academia. According to the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business-International (AACSB), starting salaries for new doctorate assistant professors by concentration are $105,800 in accounting, $91,900 in computers and information systems, $108,800 in finance, $91,800 in marketing, $101,200 in operations/statistics, and $93,300 across the disciplines. These averages apply to all AACSB member school graduates. Graduates from the Simon School earn between 40 and 50 percent above the average since most of our graduates receive positions at business schools with competitive positioning.
The success we have experienced in placing our students stems, in large part, from the importance the Simon School attaches to its Ph.D. Program and the consequent high quality of the training provided in the Program.
The Ph.D. Program is an Integral Part of the Simon School’s Business StrategyIn recent years, due to media rankings of M.B.A. programs, resources devoted to business Ph.D. programs have been shrinking. Both funding and the extent to which the best faculty teach and supervise student theses in Ph.D. programs have been reduced. Given the pressure to improve M.B.A. rankings, deans view Ph.D. programs as cost centers and ask, why should I devote resources to training my future competitors for free? That is not the case at the Simon School. The Ph.D. Program is viewed as a complement to the M.B.A. program in attaining the School’s objectives.
The Training Offered is Both Analytical and Practical. It seems as if every academic field has become more analytically oriented in the past two decades; the management field is no exception. Our program is designed to equip students with modern quantitative tools and techniques. There exists, however, a danger of becoming preoccupied with technique while losing sight of the problem. At the Simon School, applied problems are not only the most challenging problems, but also are the most rewarding. We convey this philosophy to our doctoral students. Those who select theoretical thesis topics know that, during their dissertation work, they will be asked to discuss the applied aspects of their research.
Students Specialize Without Succumbing to Academic "Tunnel Vision."To do research at the frontiers of a field, one must first acquire the kind of thorough background that is impossible to obtain in more than a few specific areas. By selecting major and minor fields, students at the Simon School achieve a degree of specialization. At the same time, distribution requirements ensure breadth of training. To obtain balance between depth and breadth, the Simon School has developed an interdisciplinary program. The School is small enough to avoid decentralization of study into departments. Our faculty belong to one or more loosely defined groups (Finance, Operations Management, etc.) but there is considerable overlap in the membership of these groups. Many of them schedule weekly seminars, attended by faculty and students, where new research is presented and discussed. Students also attend thesis proposal seminars given by their colleagues in many different areas. These informal opportunities, which cut across the various academic disciplines, allow students to get a broad understanding in many of the areas taught at the Simon School.
Faculty Members are Accessible to Their Students.One-to-one contact with faculty members is important in all phases of the educational process, but is particularly vital at the thesis-writing stage. In many Ph.D. programs, relatively few professors with good reputations are available to supervise theses and students compete for the time of those faculty members. This problem does not exist at the Simon School. We maintain a small program intentionally and are proud of it. With fewer Ph.D. students, faculty members are available to devote additional time to each individual.
Simon Offers Generous Financial Aid.Students admitted to the Simon Ph.D. Program qualify for our full-tuition scholarship and adequent financial support to cover living expenses for up to four years. Financial support, in the form of a no-service-required-fellowship that averages $21,000 per year, is available to students through their fourth year.
Simon is an Internationally-Known Center of Research.Three prestigious journals are edited at the Simon School. The Journal of Financial Economics (J.F.E.) is widely acknowledged as one of the highest quality finance journals. Various citation studies find the J.F.E. ranks close to the top among all economics journals for the rate at which other papers reference the articles it publishes. The Journal of Accounting & Economics ranks the highest among accounting journals for citation impact. The Journal of Monetary Economics ranks very high among macroeconomics journals, and is near the top among all economics journals for citation impact. These publications give our faculty access to leading research throughout the world as it is being produced, which is an important factor in training doctoral students.

ESO - Part Time MBA - Simon Business School

Part-Time M.B.A. Program Your decision to pursue an M.B.A. marks one of the most important steps along the path of your business career. More important, the place you obtain your degree lays the groundwork for the type of skills you will master and the caliber of professional relationships you will forge.
When you enroll in the Simon School’s Part-Time M.B.A. Program, you will immerse yourself in one of the most rewarding educational experiences in the world. The Part-Time M.B.A. Program is as challenging as our full-time program, but it is specifically tailored to the needs of part-time students. One of the major advantages our part-time students enjoy is a strong network of over 2,000 alumni in the Upstate New York area, which means many part-time students have mentors available to them in their own work environments. In fact, many of our M.B.A. graduates are now executives with some of the most respected companies in our area, including Bausch & Lomb, PaeTec Communications, Citicorp, Eastman Kodak Company, Gleason Corporation, Paychex, Xerox Corporation, and Wegmans Food Markets. They can attest that developing your skills at the Simon School ensures a positive, long-term return on your educational investment.

ESD - Full Time MBA - Simon Business School

Full-Time M.B.A. ProgramYour decision to pursue an M.B.A. marks one of the most important steps along the path of your business career. The full-time graduating class of 2006 has approximately 150 students, which provides intentially small core and elective classes and facilitates a highly interactive learning process between fellow classmates and professors. Selective Admission and Diverse Students. Applicants are chosen for their potential to make contributions to business, as well as the diversity of their personal and professional backgrounds. International students comprise approximately 40% of each entering full-time class, making Simon one of the most culturally diverse among leading U.S. graduate business programs. This creates a dynamic learning environment, and dramatically impacts how students learn about the global marketplace. Economics-Based Approach and Cross-Functional Curriculum. The common thread of economics allows students and faculty to share ideas and solve problems based on mutually understood methods and terminology. Faculty members teach students that most organizational problems incorporate finance, accounting, operational, strategic and marketing issues; thereby students learn to look at issues from numerous vantage points and come to fully understand fundamental concepts. ESW - MBA in Marketing 3 at LBS

Marketing Electives 3
Implementing Marketing Strategies
The overall objective of this course is to provide students with practical knowledge about how to craft marketing plans that implement marketing strategies. A robust planning framework is introduced and applied in case studies that requires careful problem definition, situation analysis and specifying strategies and objectives. The emphasis is on quantitative and qualitative analysis that make marketing plans more transparent and accountable, which is the first priority for marketing for many CEOs, CMOs, and CFOs. There is also an emphasis on demonstrating marketing's ROI, and on key qualitative and quantitative concepts and tools used in marketing planning.
Marketing Communication
The marketing communications landscape has changed considerably over the last fifteen years, with many changes driven by technology. Others reflect the significantly increased emphasis placed on concepts that have been around for some time. Today, progressive organisations start with the premise that they are planning a marketing communication campaign - not simply an advertising campaign. This assumption not only helps to avoid any over-reliance on advertising, it also allows them to consider other promotional options as part of a unified marketing strategy. Communication tools such as sales promotion, direct marketing and public relations are often combined with an advertising program rather than integrated together to produce a seamless marketing effort. Central to this course is an understanding of how organisations can avoid this and engage in more effective dialogue with multiple stakeholders.
Marketing Research
This course focuses on understanding marketing research, its process, and its outputs. The techniques of research design, data collection, and data analysis occupy an important role and emphasis will be on the interpretation and use of results rather than on mathematical derivations and computer programming. The course focuses on helping managers recognise the role of systematic information gathering and analysis in making marketing decisions and develop an appreciation for the potential contributions and limitations of marketing research data. The course is aimed particularly at managers who are ultimate users of the research and responsible for determining the scope and direction of research conducted on his/her behalf.

ESKR - MBA in Marketing 2

Marketing Electives 2

Business to Business Marketing
Business to business marketing involves management of the product or services, as well as distribution relationships. The majority of investments, consulting projects and business challenges focus on industrial goods and services, and the goal of this course is to help students develop a comprehensive understanding of how marketing strategies can be developed and executed in a B2B marketing environment. Examined is the importance of industrial marketing and the unique and unusual issues which one encounters when marketing to organisations rather than to households or individual consumers. The course is run as a block week and focuses on the interaction between the process of formulating, implementing, and controlling marketing strategies under competitive threat and product life-cycle challenges.
Creativity and Personal Mastery
Creativity and Personal Mastery is a highly-rated and innovative course devised and taught by visiting Professor Srikumar S. Rao of Columbia Business School. It was designed to produce a profound change to one's life, and it is expected that participants will set out on a path of discovery that will last the rest of their lives. Only the individual can bring about this change, and this course provides the tools needed need to do so. The formal end of the course at the completion of the semester is a largely meaningless demarcation and many students who took it years ago are still actively pursuing their quests. The class is limited to 30 participants and students must undertake an extremely stringent application process to be considered for selection.
Global Marketing
This is an advanced course that examines the specific challenges involved in entering international markets and in conducting marketing operations on an international scale. Students will extend their experience in identifying and evaluating opportunities worldwide, developing and adapting market strategies in relation to specific national market needs or constraints, and the execution and coordination of international marketing programs. Of particular focus in the course are international country markets, the examination of broader strategic issues, and how to evaluate markets and choose entry strategies as well as implementing marketing plans. Emphasized are marketing analyses and variables with an eye on strategic issues relating to international operations rather than on technical aspects of exporting and importing.

ERC - Joint Degree Program - UIUC

Joint Degree Programs
Joint Degrees allow students to earn two graduate degrees simultaneously. Typically, the period of study is shorter than if each degree was pursued independently. The Illinois MBA has developed several joint degree agreements with other departments on campus.
Students need to apply to each degree program separately. All admissions decisions are made independently. It's a good idea to be familiarized with admissions policies and all application procedures for each individual college.
Students interested in a joint degree with one of the following colleges must complete the requirements outlined by both the joint college and the Illinois MBA. To obtain a list of requirements for the joint colleges below, contact the college directly.

EMCR - The Boston Advantage

Is this the world’s best college town? With 60 colleges and universities, we think so.
Boston, during the academic year, hosts more than 100,000 students and all the businesses and entertainment that cater to them.
But what else is here? Possibly more researchers and PhDs per capita than anywhere else on Earth. That means a concentration of intellectual, business, and scientific organizations that seek and reward a constant inflow of fresh young minds with new energy and new ideas.
Sure, some of the folks here talk a little funny. But we take education seriously. Not to mention our cultural assets (architecture, art, museums, libraries, symphony), historical landmarks, restaurants and clubs, shopping, and our college and pro sports teams. The School itself is just two blocks away from the Fenway Park where the Red Sox play.
Boston is a fascinating, walkable city with an excellent public transit system. Yet nearby you will find ocean and lake beaches, mountains, and wilderness. Home to major financial institutions, the world’s premier hospitals, high tech, bioscience, and more, Boston's universities and local firms enrich each other. When you attend Boston University, you get Boston, too. Use it to your advantage.

EMM - DBA program at Boston University

Extraordinary changes in the global business environment are challenging management schools across continents. Management education must impart the skills required to respond to technological changes, the information revolution, global competition, and constant shifts in political and social environments. Many of the management models adopted by business are outdated, and call for innovative ideas rooted in solid academic research.
Boston University’s DBA program addresses this need by training scholars to develop and sharpen management theories to enhance their contribution to management education and practice. Students acquire advanced knowledge of literature and theory in their area of specialization, the major, as well as solid grounding in a minor, for example, a social science discipline, such as sociology, economics, or political science, that provides a foundation for their area of specialization. They are given theoretical and practical knowledge of advanced research skills, which is essential for publishing in leading academic journals.
The program ensures that students develop an appreciation of the role of their research domain in managerial and organizational contexts, and can translate their learning from scholarly research into effective teaching.
Our faculty, which has earned world-wide recognition for its scholarly and applied research, is the School’s major resource for doctoral education. Their commitment to advancing management knowledge through research published in top journals, and improving the quality of teaching, enables them to effectively mentor doctoral students, who, in close collaboration with faculty, are part of the intellectual capital of the School.
The majority of doctoral students entering the DBA program receive substantial financial assistance, which covers full tuition for four years and a generous stipend. The total financial assistance for four years ranges from $135,000 for full fellowships to $119,000 for partial fellowships.
